Racecourse Maintenance Services
We maintain each natural grass racecourse to the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) Standards, following each of their guidelines with precision and using modern machinery to complete each project. As the BHA racecourse manual states ‘The damage inflicted by horses upon the turf during a race fixture should not be underestimated.’ – ALS takes the maintenance of each racecourse turf track extremely seriously.
Each set of guidelines differs for each type of turf track – whether you own a turf flat racing track, hurdle racing track or steeplechase racing track, ALS can complete your project with ease and efficiency, making sure your racecourse is safe and fair.
There’s a range of reasons why racecourses use natural grass over artificial turf or dirt:
- Natural grass is easier on the horse’s legs – unlike dirt, grass provides a level of cushioning for the horse’s feet, this reduces the risk of injury.
- Dirt is picked up by the horse’s hooves and thrown around – this can lead to dirt getting in other horses’ eyes and face, causing them to perform worse by affecting their eyesight.
- Fast surface with optimum frictional properties
Aintree racecourse, the home of the Grand National, uses natural grass on its track. It’s the ideal surface for horse racing.
